Chatham County commissioners adopted a 155-day moratorium on data centers with electrical capacity of at least 10 megawatts in unincorporated areas. The ordinance also blocks conversions of large warehouses and industrial buildings to data-center use while the county studies effects on public health, safety, water, power and nearby development. The pause runs to Feb. 16, 2027 and may be extended by as many as 60 days.
Why it matters
The county has temporarily closed a path for the largest data centers while it writes standards for a land use with unusually heavy utility demands.
