Georgia DOT crews will close one lane at a time on the Talmadge Memorial Bridge over the Savannah River, weekdays from Sept. 10 to 25 between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m., with at least one lane open in each direction.
The work lets crews survey and inspect the bridge ahead of a cable replacement expected to begin later this year, part of a larger maintenance job that also covers bearings and joints. GDOT is studying whether shortening the cables could raise the bridge's clearance, which the Georgia Ports Authority says would let larger container ships reach the Port of Savannah.
GDOT says the bridge is safe and the work is planning for the future.
