Savannah's new stormwater utility fee started appearing on water customers' bills Sept. 1, charging $2 to $12 a month based on a property's impervious surface, roofs, driveways and parking lots, on the theory that more paved surface means more runoff into the city's drainage system.
City officials say a typical household will see about $4.75 a month, and the fee is expected to raise roughly $8-9 million a year, dedicated entirely to stormwater system operations, maintenance and capital projects aimed at reducing flooding risk.
