The 10-story tower at 7 East Congress Street opened in 1912 as the Savannah Hotel, took the Manger name in 1954, and spent decades as offices after its last guests left in 1977. New York developer Left Lane, the firm behind Hotel Bardo a few blocks away, has converted it into Recess Hotel and Club with 221 keys: 136 rooms, 23 top-floor suites and 62 bunk rooms.
The design firm Atelier Pond kept the building's original mosaic floors and arched windows and added four food and drink rooms, a 5,500-square-foot clubhouse, a spa and Kilter, a rooftop bar with a pool about 12 stories up. Rooms start around $300 a night when it opens this fall, and the hotel has joined Leading Hotels of the World.
Why it matters
It returns one of Savannah's oldest high-rises to hotel use after nearly 50 years as offices, and adds a members' club and rooftop pool to the Johnson Square blocks.
