Promotion

A business, development, event or organization pays to reach the audience, and the work is about them: an opening, a leasing push, a festival, a hiring announcement, a grand reveal. It is made to their brief and it is their message.

Every piece of it is labeled where it appears. In the caption and on screen for social. In its own marked block in the Brief, outside the story list. On this site, on the placement itself.

Platform sponsorship

A sponsor can instead fund the regular work: the development coverage, the explainers, the Brief. They are named as the sponsor of that work. They are not in it.

A sponsor does not choose which projects get covered, does not see coverage before it publishes, and does not approve it.

What is not for sale

Coverage. A project does not get an update because somebody paid for one, and does not lose one because somebody paid either.

Removal. A published update comes down when it is wrong, not when its subject would rather it were gone. What happens when it is wrong is on the corrections page.

The verification status, the sources list, or anything else on a page that tells a reader how well an item is supported.

What we turn down

Work we would not be allowed to label. Work we cannot verify enough to put our name beside. Requests to write about a rival's project in a way we would not have written about it anyway.

If you think we have got this wrong

Tell us. A paid placement that reached you without a label is a failure on our side, and we would rather hear it from you than not hear it.
