Atlanta Mission has canceled plans to buy 15.5 acres at 1060 Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway NW in Bankhead, ending a bid to consolidate the city's homeless shelters into a single 900-bed campus along the Beltline's Westside Trail. The nonprofit announced the $200 million project in February, targeting a 2030 opening with roughly 7 acres for the shelter and job-assistance services, the other 8 acres sold off to a housing developer.
Neighbors in Bankhead and Hunter Hills organized against it almost immediately, and the Atlanta City Council passed a resolution in May putting the project on hold over land-use and zoning concerns. Atlanta Mission said in a statement it will "pursue another location where this vision can best succeed."
The site itself has already changed hands once for a very different vision: The Allen Morris Company, the Florida firm behind West Midtown's Star Metals District, bought the parcel for $31 million in 2022 with plans for 1,600 residential units and 700,000 square feet of commercial space anchored by a Beltline-facing town center.
That plan never broke ground either. What happens on the 15.5 acres now is open again.
Why it matters
The reversal leaves one of the largest single parcels on the Westside Beltline without a plan, after two different visions for it both stalled.
