The Atlanta BeltLine broke ground Sept. 10 on Northwest Trail Segment 3B, the roughly one-mile stretch its team calls the most technically difficult of the entire 22-mile loop. Unlike most of the BeltLine, this corridor has no old rail bed to pave over, so the trail has to weave through streets, cross Northside Drive on a new pedestrian bridge and thread beneath I-75 on an elevated structure along the Tanyard Creek channel.

It runs from Trabert Avenue near The Grove to Tanyard Creek Park, linking Ardmore, Berkeley Park, Brookwood, Collier Hills and Loring Heights to the finished Segment 3A and the Northside Trail. CEO Clyde Higgs said the bridge "blew the budget for sure, but it was the right thing to do."

The segment is due in late fall 2028, part of the push to close the full loop by 2030.

Why it matters

This is the segment that decides whether the BeltLine actually closes its loop on schedule; the Northwest quadrant has been the hardest and most expensive to build, and moving dirt here is the clearest sign the 2030 target is real.

Opening

BeltLine Starts Northwest Trail Segment 3B

Construction has started on Atlanta BeltLine Northwest Trail Segment 3B, a nearly one-mile link from Trabert Avenue to Tanyard Creek Park. The route will bridge Northside Drive, pass through Atlanta Technology Center and under I-75, connecting five northwest Atlanta neighborhoods to the completed Segment 3A and Northside Trail. Atlanta BeltLine lists late fall 2028 as the expected opening.
