Westside Future Fund held a groundbreaking for its first ground-up new development this week, a $6.7 million, two-building project at 280 James P. Brawley Boulevard NW in Vine City. Permits show one three-story building with 12 units and a second with six, sharing a 13-space parking lot, on what the nonprofit describes as formerly blighted and vacant land.
The site sits across the street from John F. Kennedy Park and Hollis Innovation Academy, about two blocks from Rodney Cook Sr. Park. Westside Future Fund has spent the past decade mostly buying, renovating and preserving existing homes on the Historic Westside to prevent displacement; this project is its first time building new construction on land it assembled itself.
Why it matters
It's a test of whether the Westside's leading preservation nonprofit can also deliver new supply, not just save what's already there.
