Alpharetta's Planning Commission voted 4-3 on August 6 to approve Jamestown's plan to tear down most of North Point Mall and replace it with a district built around a 20,000-seat arena designed by Frank Gehry, sized for a third NHL team in metro Atlanta.

The plan also calls for 1,385 apartments, three hotels totaling more than 1,100 rooms, 750,000 square feet of office space, a 4,000-seat music hall, a 500-seat movie theater and more than 16 acres of parks and trails on the mall's parking fields.

Renderings show a Corten-steel arena shaped like a hockey puck, with a MARTA bus rapid transit stop and pedestrian bridge planned along Ga. 400. The Alpharetta City Council takes the final vote on August 24.

Why it matters

It's a bet that a fading regional mall can be replaced by a stadium-anchored district big enough to land Atlanta's third NHL franchise, the same redevelopment playbook Jamestown ran at Ponce City Market on a much larger scale.
