Sandy Springs City Council approved an incentive package worth about $4.3 million on Aug. 18 to help Woodfield Development redevelop the North River Shopping Center at 8830 Roswell Road. The package waives $1.775 million in recreation and permit fees and recommends a 10-year property tax abatement through the city's development authority.
In exchange, the plan trades the fading strip center for 336 apartments, 85 for-sale townhomes, at least 10,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, and a 0.71-acre public park with a playground and shaded seating that the developer will hand over to the city.
The land sale is expected to close in September, with construction following later this year.
Why it matters
It is more of Roswell Road's car-oriented retail becoming walkable housing, and it gives Sandy Springs a public park in a part of the city that has few.
