Alpharetta's dying mall clears a real hurdle on its way to becoming an NHL arena

Alpharetta's planning commission voted 4-3 on Aug. 6 to advance Jamestown and New York Life's plan to raze most of North Point Mall and replace it with a sports-anchored entertainment district built around a 20,000-seat arena sized for an NHL franchise.

Residents spoke overwhelmingly in favor at the meeting. The nearly 100-acre plan, designed by HKS Architects with Machete Group advising on the arena piece, also calls for a 4,000-seat music hall, a 2,000-seat community hockey rink, three hotels totaling 850 keys, a 45,000-square-foot conference center, 907,000 square feet of retail and dining, 750,000 square feet of office space and 1,385 apartments.

Jamestown, the Atlanta firm behind Ponce City Market, has said it will not build the arena without first landing an NHL team. The Alpharetta City Council takes the final vote Aug. 24.

Why it matters

A dead regional mall is one council vote away from becoming the site of Atlanta's NHL bid, the biggest single redevelopment try yet for a struggling suburban mall.
